Imagine someone coming into your room in the middle of the night, sneaking up nice and close to you with a giant gong and smacking it as hard as they can every 5 - 10 sec. Now allow your room to rotate and twist. Suddenly you have rolled to one side of your bed, and then the other, and then back again, all the while the gong keeps going. It is hot and you are sweating profusely despite having thrown your only sheet to the other side of the bed.

Frequent blog followers will be privy to our search for a mystical barrelling right hand point break on St Helena Island, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. When we arrived after 12 days at sea, we almost fell over ourselves getting off the boat, into a rental car, Sitka boards on the roof, Globe sandals on, Livity hats on and driving to the beach.

The popularity of surfing and surfers has been in flux since the first wave riders experienced the thrill of rushing towards shore, powered by the liquid crashing force of waves. The ancient Polynesians and Hawaiians are heralded as the forefathers of our sport. Early European explorers and discoverers were astonished to see "savage" natives riding broken waves in their canoes or on rough hewn log planks, for no other purpose than recreation. Unfortunately, many of these early explorers were also vehement Christians spreading their versions of the word of God.

The Ocean Gybe gang spent a little time giving surf lessons to street children and cleaning up the beach at Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town. The "Let’s Go Surfing" project is a drop in centre on Saturdays and Sundays for kids to go to the beach, get a free surfing lesson, grab some food to eat, do a beach clean-up and learn about the ocean.

From guest blogger, Shayla Hall:
Considering all the time I had to prepare for this beautiful stint aboard Khulula (1 week notice) you'd think I'd be prepared for every eventuality. However, as a true Polywog* I was most shocked not by the fact that Bryson now bakes fresh bread in the morning, nor by Hugh's neon yellow Speedo, but sea sickness so dreadful it made me consider jumping off the back of Khulula into the equatorial ocean.

Oh, excuse me Cabin boy! May I please have another aperitif with my caviar? Shall we sup on the foredeck this evening? Mmm... Quite. Rather. Ho hum. Splendid. Yes, you think, this is the world we live in, one of decadence, ease, lollipops and gumdrops.
