A Day in the Water with Leah Oke... And Friends

Sitka Surf Team member, Leah Oke, recently got the first women's cover of SBC Surf Magazine ever! You probably already knew that though. But, you may not know that Leah travels the globe whenever possible searching out the best waves on which to surf and the nicest beaches on which to chill.

Leah relayed a story from one of her recent travel experience, which we've retold below. You can also read an interview with her for SBC here.

"Here is a funny little story that happened while on my last surf trip to Panama. We stopped by the surf camp and grabbed our Panamanian friend, Gonzalo, and headed out on the search for waves.

We drove down a narrow winding road along the coastal town and down the beach for a few kilometres to finally end up at this fun little reeling right pointbreak at the mouth of a river. It looked super fun but the water was really brown and murky, which was a little erie. We were amped to find waves though so we got geared up and hit the water.

I was paddling out alongside Gonzalo when I saw something surface and thrash up the water a little bit before going back down! it was such a quick movement and the water was so murky that I couldn't see what it was. So, I asked Gonzalo what it could have been. He responded nonchalantly, "Probably a shark."

"What do you mean!? What kind of shark !?" I responded.

"Bull sharks," He said.

"Well aren't they aggressive?" I asked.

"Sometimes."

"Well do they bite people?" I pushed.

"Sometimes."

Gonzalo then turned around and caught a wave.

It was a weird session I saw more surfacing of unknown sealife than I'd ever seen before, and was even hit by something in the foot. Even with the water was teeming with sea life at this spot I somehow felt safe out there! Definitely one of the most unique sessions of my life."
