The OceanGybe will be touring BC school's soon to inform students of their adventures and findings. Their presentations are informative, entertaining and sure to motivate students to get out and see the world while doing what they can to preserve our oceans. See what the OceanGybe have to say about their tour below:
The OceanGybe Youth Awareness Campaign aka School Tour
As the sailing portion of the OceanGybe Expedition has now come to a close, we are preparing to start to begin the next chapter for OceanGybe: The OceanGybe Youth Plastic Awareness Campaign, proudly supported by Mountain Equipment Co-op and Sitka.
Our goal is to inspire and ignite change in a new sustainable direction with renewed energy from a couple months on land. After presenting our research findings and adventure stories to over 10 000 students in 30 different schools in more than 15 countries around the world, we are excited to be able to tell our story to schools in Western Canada.
We will driving across BC and Alberta, talking to elementary and high school students from May 30th until June 13th.
The high-level goals of OceanGybe Youth Plastic Awareness Campaign are three fold:
1. Educate students about the problem of ocean plastic pollution, the effect on oceans, ecosystems, and the food chain; and why we should all care.
2. Raise awareness about causes, and the solutions (from immediate individual action, to collective advocacy and political changes)
3. Inspire – knowledge of the issue and awareness of one’s role is important; the inspiration to do something is how one person becomes many and makes a difference. We use our adventure stories of sailing around the world to hopefully inspire kids to follow their dreams and help preserve our oceans at the same time.
Currently, our itinerary goes as follows:
May 31st: Kelowna, BC
June 1st: Nelson, BC
June 2nd: Fernie, BC
June 3rd: Calgary, AB
June 4th: Canmore, AB
June 6th: Prince George, BC
June 7th: Smithers, BC
June 8th: Hazelton, BC
June 9th: Terrace, BC
June 10th: Prince Rupert, BC
We plan on continuing our OceanGybe Youth Plastic Awareness Campaign in September, once schools reopen, with presentations in the Greater Vancouver Area, Victoria and Vancouver Island.
