Kelly Clarkson is a Raglan based surfer who lives for the ocean. After quitting a regular income and job, she spent 5 months driving from LA to Panama, and spending a bit of time in the hammock at a well known right hand point break, she came up with some thoughts.
Kamelia Purwo has joined forces with Sustainable Coastlines to deliver a 5 print series of tee shirts that reflect her passion for looking after out sea creatures and coastlines. The limited edition tees are now proudly available from Sitka in mens and womens cuts and a variety of sizes.
Mischa Davis (Piha) picked up the top position in the opening round of the Hyundai Longboard Tour for 2012 in Raglan this passed weekend. Fresh back from a year of studying and surf coaching in Europe, this was the first competition in over 12 months and with the rain coming down, she belted out a score of 14.73 in the final.
This weekend, Jan 7th - 8th, Raglan plays host to the first round of the 2012 Hyundai Longboard Tour. Sitka's own Mischa Davis from Piha will be competing in the Open Womens division and defending her winning title from last years event. Mischa's father Steve "Roachy" Davis will also be competing this weekend making an appearance in the more "refined" classes.
Motiti Island, located off the Bay of Plenty coast of New Zealand's North Island, is home to a small Iwi that have called the island home for generations. Located 21 kilometres north-east of Tauranga, the community of 30 odd full time inhabitants have lived a full self sufficient sustainable lifestlyle until the Rena ran aground Astrolabe Reef early in October.
New Faces Shine For Auckland Scholastic Surfing Team with many of the established names missing from the line-up (due to travel and competitive commitments) the 2011 Sitka/Sanuk Auckland Scholastic Surfing Team had a fresh look about it this year. With the lack of contest experience amongst the team, prior to the event many observers were already writing them off, saying things like “Nevermind, it’ll be good experience for the young ones anyway”. Trouble is, someone forgot to tell the team members that!
Sitka was very proud to host the launch of Craig Lever's new book Beached As - Then and Now this October. Following on from Craig's very successful Beached As book, he decided to retrace his late Aunty Audrey's footsteps from 70 years ago when she was a photographer herself. Beached As - Then and Now is a collection of black and white photography, of certain beaches, and then the same shots recreated over the last 2 years.
Politics aside, Blames aside, Everything aside... the Bay of Plenty and the Rena oil spill disaster, is in the hands of some very special people doing an amazing job.
