Nic Colson-Koster grabs 2nd at VQS Lavafish

VQS ´Lavafish´ Famara 1-2 October 2011 by Nicola Colson-Koster

The conditions couldn´t have been better really, there was no wind what so ever, clear skies and most importantly , good waves. The groms were all over it, a couple of them I swear were only five years old, they were tiny and absolutely ripping, I think the most amusing part of the whole contest for me was a couple of the finalists from the open men´s surfed in nut huggers, I kept looking around to see if anyone was laughing thinking it must of been a big joke, turns out it wasnt and it´s actually quite normal here! Crazy eruopeans I tell ya. Lets just say that I am very happy that in NZ there is no way you could get away with that.

Anywho, my first heat was up in the morning, the surf was about 2 foot, low tide and glassy as. I had 5 girls in my heat, all a bit younger than me and surfed really well, I managed to win it and get through to the semi´s which was on a bit later and the conditions had changed quite a bit by then with the tide coming up. I caught a couple of nice ones but was finding it hard in the small conditions with the board i´m borrowing since I snapped mine in two. It´s a 6´4 and really fat and wide so I struggled to turn it but managed to win the heat which I was rather chuffed about!

My room mate said I could borrow here other board for the final as it is a bit smaller so I took it out for a test before the final and it felt heaps better. The finals weren´t on till late afternoon and by that time the tide was full and the waves had detolerated. In my heat I had 3 other local girls, one who I had befriended a few weeks ago in La Santa in 8 foot so I had my eye on here coz´a little birdy told me she rips! The finals were only 15 minutes so as soon as the hooter went we were all on a mission, the lack of waves didnt make things any easier and the fact that any waves that did come through pretty much just closed out! There were a couple of peelers though and I managed to grovel on a couple of them, the wave of the heat came through towards the end of the heat and another girl had it and we all new as soon as she took off that the final was hers, she smashed the wave and we sat out the back bowing our heads.
