How my brain works. Everyone has left and right brains, but more than likely favor one of the two. For me, I favor the left, the logical and analytical brain over the random and subjective right brain. This may be odd as it is said that artists are supposed to be right-brained thinkers but I can rationalize thinking the way that I do and still be a creative person. The best approach to being creative for me, is just to let myself be in the moment and allow everything surrounding me absorb into my thoughts. And to have my beloved little sketchbook on hand to quickly draw or write down if something rad comes through my thoughts. My best approach is pulling ideas out of lines from songs or books or movies or even the ridiculous things that come out of my friends' mouths. I get pretty excited when I grab the things, as if I'm about to go on an adventure. These snippets aren't what I try to recreate, but a departure to something creative of my own. My left brain then clicks in and begins to rationalize what exactly I'm trying to do. It asks the right brain if there's a way to connect with a common theme of other artworks, if there's a sense of my style that people recognize, or even if the idea is worth digressing. Left brain participation is usually done by editing all the rough drawings and ramblings that I do in my sketchbook. The easy part is the final artwork, unless I'm experimenting with new techniques with painting and drawing. It's good to try out new things as it could lead to an entire different path of making art. But usually I'll stay within my boundaries, grab my favorite inking brush and paints, a good album, and go to town. And when I'm making art, I'm living in the moment, allowing myself to be open and absorbing.
