Sun Wizard

Sun Wizard are a newly formed four-piece rock n’ roll band from Vancouver, BC. Their debut E.P was literally sweated out over four sun drenched days at the peak of last summer’s heat wave. Recorded at The Hive Studios by college rock auteur Colin Stewart, (Black Mountain, Sleepy Sun, Gigi, Ladyhawk, etc) the E.P was subsequently mixed by the equally talented Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Sloan, Marilyn Manson, Skinny Puppy, NIN, etc) at Mushroom Studios.

“Around the time we recorded it we were listening to bands like Spoon, Deer Tick, Surfer Blood, Dr Dog and we wanted to make an E.P with a similar vibe: Catchy, melodic rock n’ roll with big guitar riffs and tight harmonies, and of course there are those classic bands that you cant help but be informed by, like Television, Steve Miller Band, Oasis & Fleetwood Mac, so those kind of bands have a big influence on our sound as well…..” – Malcolm

On Listening to the E.P you can hear the band channeling that ^^^ often elusive element in rock music; that magic dust that gets pulled out from the ether every so often. It’s unexpected, and when traced it seems to act like the common thread in a lineage of influential song driven rock n’ roll bands. Sun Wizard could easily be Jack White’s younger brothers, Tom Petty’s nephews, or Bob Dylan’s grandchildren. In short, they sound like a real band; a band that have always been there.

“From Neil Young, through Big Star, to Nirvana, and then The Strokes. There is something so triumphant in picking up a guitar and writing songs about girls, or getting lost drinking a beer in the middle of nowhere in the back of your mind, or why the whole world just seems so insane! There is something so universal in that kind of expression.” – James
Sun Wizard officially started playing music together as a four piece last spring, when bass player Francesco Lyon came home from a few strange months in Toronto. However, the seeds were planted on a hazy trip to Vancouver Island the summer before, where a couple of days turned into a lost weekend that saw Francesco, accompanied by James Younger and Malcolm Jack, Sun Wizard’s alternating songwriter/vocalists, stagger onto stage and play an impromptu acoustic show. The following spring, carrying a suitcase full of lyrics, the band became a band when Ben Frey sat down at the drums. Sun Wizard got a jam space with a panther blanket on the wall, bought plenty of candles, incense and rugs, rehearsed a bunch, and booked their first show. Since then they have played with bands, like Vetiver, The Cave Singers, Deer Tick, and Immaculate Machine among others.

“It’s been really cool and encouraging to play with bands, just other folks out there doing their thing, its helped us to find our feet as a live band, and we just kinda have this attitude of, keep doing what we are doing, and it should all work out, and well, it seems to be coming true.” – Francesco

Sun Wizard recently headed back to The Hive to record two more songs, which will be coming out on a 7″ in the coming months. This summer the band will spend a couple of weeks in Vancouver’s famous Mushroom Studios to record their first full-length album.

“Basically, our main thing is making well produced, timeless pop/rock songs that get people stoked and have the potential to be radio singles. But we’re also ready to take our music out of Vancouver and onto the open road, to search for a life without beds, and for girls without boyfriends. We figure this’ll probably lead to fame and fortune, cause like, we have some pretty killer tunes man.” So, if you’re reading this, we hope you like our music, thanks for listening. See you at a bar in your town this summer!” – James
