The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 90 chapters worldwide. Here in British Columbia, Canada we currently have two chapters: Vancouver and Vancouver Island.
The Vancouver Chapter was established in 2005 in an effort to bring awareness to some of the threats facing our coastal and marine ecosystems here in the Greater Vancouver Region. Today, the chapter runs under the leadership of five executive committee members: Haley Haggerstone, Maya Stano, Susan Levert, Rachelle Poitras, and Sophie Robert Arsenault. Together these ladies effectively manage the chapter's Rise Above Plastics campaign, Respect the Beach program and Snowrider Project (aimed at expanding Surfrider Foundation's realm of influence to include mountain ecoystems). In an effort to raise funds in support of their mission to help protect our oceans, waves and beaches the Vancouver Chapter is selling t-shirts and reusable bags, which are available for purchase at Sitka Surfboards in Vancouver! T-shirts are $20, reusable bags are $10, and a t-shirt, bag and a Surfrider Foundation membership is only $30.
