In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie was humbled by the plight of children lacking shoes in Argentina. In an effort to help, he founded TOMS shoes and later that year returned to Argentina with 10,000 pairs of shoes. This contribution was made possible by the success of a simple idea: ‘One for One.’ Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good, TOMS provides shoes for children in 24 different countries around the world. As of September 2010, TOMS had given over one million pairs of shoes to children in need.
TOMS works with a number of humanitarian, health, non-government and nonprofit organizations already established in their respective countries. This collaborative effort allows TOMS to focus on the business of manufacturing and retailing of shoes, while these organizations facilitate their delivery to the children who need them most. The company also organizes Shoe Drops, in which volunteers are invited to travel to a particular country and assist the program staff. These individuals are given the unique opportunity to see the project in action by placing shoes on the feet of children in need. TOMS’ goal is that these Shoe Drop participants will return home with a renewed sense of commitment to improve the world around them. On April 5th, TOMS is celebrating A Day Without Shoes, where people worldwide will shed their shoes for one day in an effort to raise awareness for the cause.
